As winter bids adieu and nature reawakens with vibrant hues, spring beckons outdoor enthusiasts to embrace the great outdoors once again. For avid hikers, spring presents an opportune time to explore trails bursting with life and whether you’re seeking a leisurely stroll or a challenging ascent, the spring season offers a myriad hiking options to suit every preference. Join us as we unveil the top hiking destinations to add to your bucket list for spring 2024.

While many of the mountain ranges of continental Europe, such as the Alps and Pyrenees are still covered in snow in the spring months, some areas are ideal during April and May. We hiked the spectacular Amalfi Coast trails in Italy in mid June a few years ago and were baking! Head there now and you can enjoy the panoramic views of the Mediterranean from trails such as Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) in much more comfortable temperatures.

If you’re looking to take the work out of planning a hike on the Amalfi Coast, consider joining Manawa’s hiking tour of the Path of the Gods: Manawa’s Hiking Tour of Path of the Gods

Similarly, southern Spain is perfect in spring. Head to the Andalucia region, where you can hike the famous El Caminito del Rey hike, or if that scares you, there are plenty of hikes around the mountain town of Ronda, in the Las Alpujarras region, and around the coastal town of Nerja.

If you’re in the mood for island hopping, the Greek and Croatian islands offer up a wide array of hiking opportunities, perfect to embark in the later spring months. Try the 220 km Corfu Trail on the Greek island of Corfu, or the walker’s paradise of Andros, or the island of Samos where the mountains reach up to 1500 m and contains 40 well-marked routes.

Another island paradise is Croatia, where the islands scattered throughout the Adriatic contain many with hiking trails to explore. Explore the new Via Brattia, a 135 km trail on the island of Brač, or the 200 km of trails on Lošinj or the 300 km of trails on the island of Cres. United Kingdom

The countries of Scotland, Wales and England offer some of the most magnificent hiking trails in the world, many of which are great to hike in the later spring months. Hike the many trails of the beautiful Lake District in England, the Quiraing Circuit or the challenging Cuillin Ridge on the wild Isle of Skye in Scotland, or head to the very popular Snowdonia National Park in Wales.

North America

At the beginning of spring, thousands of hikers make their start on one of the two world-famous long-distance trails in the US. The Appalachian Trail, on the east coast, traverses the Appalachian Mountains through fourteen states, from Springer Mountain in Georgia and ending in Mount Katahdin in Maine by the fall months. On the west coast, Pacific Crest Trail hikers start on the Mexican border and head through the several mountain ranges from California through Oregon and Washington before finishing on the Canadian border several months later.  Neither trail is for the novice hiker, prepare well!

Middle East

Famed for the iconic archeological site of Petra, Jordan is a beautiful country to hike in the spring, before the heat of the summer. Embark on the Jordan Trail (taking in the whole country) and Wadi Rum Trail (taking in the sublime Wadi Rum desert) are two well known long distance hiking trails in this Middle Eastern country.

Similarly, Lebanon is another Middle Eastern country that boasts a country-long trail: the Lebanon Mountain Trail where you can take in the country’s mountains, cedar groves, steep cliffs, gorges and waterfalls.  The spring months are a perfect time to hike in Lebanon.

Magical Morocco is perfect for hiking in spring. This northern African country offers up four different mountain ranges to explore, including the High Atlas mountains. Read more in this blog post for more details on hiking in Morocco: Hiking in Morocco

At the opposite end of the continent, South Africa boasts the epic Drakensberg Grand Traverse, a long distance trail traversing the gorgeous peaks of the Drakensberg mountains. The 220 km trek is best undertaken – for the intrepid hiker – from March to May (autumn months in the southern hemisphere).

Réunion is a stunning Indian Ocean island, an overseas French department, and found off the coast of Madagascar.  There are more than 1000 km of hiking trails, found within the UNESCO World Heritage National Park, taking up almost half of this small island. The island is dominated by the three Cirques – Salazie, Cilaos and Mafate – which are volcanic depressions providing staggering natural landscapes with, luckily, hiking trails laced throughout.  May to October are the best months to hike here.

While the Inca trail to Machu Picchu gets all the attention, there are thousands of kilometres of other trails that beckon hikers in the South American country of Peru.  The stunning beauty of the Andean mountains are unbeatable, with the added bonus that in many places, you’re walking along the same routes of the Incan people more than 700 years earlier.  Base yourself in Huaraz and try the Santa Cruz trek. Or try the alternative Machu Picchu trails such as the Salkantay trek. Or explore the Rainbow Mountains in the Vilcanota mountains. The options are endless, and the best months to hike here are May to October.

Another South American gem to hike in the same months as Peru is Bolivia. Known as the Tibet of South America, Bolivia is the perfect country for people who like their hikes and treks with a side of adventure.  With many peaks over 6000 m, there is stunning high altitude hiking to be had in Bolivia, including from the capital La Paz. Some of the well known treks include the El Choro trek, Huayna Potosí and Cerro Austria.

South Koreans take their hiking very seriously, and spring is a great time to hike the many mountainous regions of South Korea. Explore Jeju Island, Bukhansan, Seoraksan National Park, Jirisan National Park, and Songnisan National Park among many others. April and May are ideal months to hike here.

More than 75% of Japan is mountainous, and the island chain has a thriving hiking culture.  All four of the main islands have excellent hiking, including: Diasetsuzan National Park on Hokkaido, Kamikochi Valley in the Japan Alps, Hakusan National Park, the Kumano Kodo trail on the Kii Peninsula, the peaks around Kyoto, and the many peaks on Kyushu such as Mount Aso.

There are so many places to mountain hike this spring; to discover more check out Where to Hike When and you can search by month.
