Jun 2, 2024 | Travel Tips

Many people head to Africa in the summer for the incredible safari experiences to be had in countries such as South Africa, Tanzania and Kenya. However, the continent offers a diverse range of hiking experiences that promise both challenge and awe-inspiring beauty. Check out some of the best places to hike in Africa in summer 2024!

Southern Africa

Summer is the coolest period to hike in Namibia, which is the ideal time for hiking in the vast, arid landscapes of this southern African country. Some of the main hiking areas include Spitzkoppe, Mount Brandberg Reserve (home of the highest mountain, Konigstein), the Naukluft Mountains and Fish River Canyon – the multi-day route here draws trekkers from all over the world. Check out the Namibia page for more information on hiking in Namibia.

South Africa

South Africa is one of the best countries for hiking on the continent, with the Drakensburg Mountains, around Cape Town and many other areas available for hiking. While the winter months are optimal for some of these better known areas, the summer months are ideal for other regions. These include: Golden Gate Highlands National Park, the Magaliesberg, Wolkberg Wilderness Area, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, Royal Natal National Park, and others. Check out the South Africa page for more information on hiking in South Africa.

The Islands

Réunion is a stunning Indian Ocean island, an overseas French department, and found off the coast of Madagascar.  There are more than 1000 km of hiking trails, found within the UNESCO World Heritage National Park, taking up almost half of this small island. The island is dominated by the three Cirques – Salazie, Cilaos and Mafate – which are volcanic depressions providing staggering natural landscapes with, luckily, hiking trails laced throughout.  The best months of the year to hike on Réunion island are May – October.  Visit the Réunion page for more information on hiking in Réunion.

Cabo Verde

Despite its name, Cabo Verde, a small group of volcanic islands off the coast of west Africa, is rocky and barren, and boasts some great hiking opportunities.

Sal and Boa Vista are popular beach destination islands, but for hiking, head to Santo Antão, São Vicente, Fogo, São Nicolau and Santiago. Santo Antão, in particular, is considered the best island for hiking.  Popular hikes include: Pico do Fogo, hikes in the Paul Valley, Ribeira Grande to Xoxo, Monte Gordo, Chã de Igreja to Ponta do Sol, Tarrafal to Monte Trigo. The best months to hike in Cabo Verde are all year. Visit the Cabo Verde page for more information on hiking in Cabo Verde.
