Devastating Floods Ravage Italy and Switzerland

Parts of Italy and Switzerland have been besieged by catastrophic flooding in recent weeks, causing severe damage in various areas of these countries. The torrential rains have swollen rivers to bursting point, inundating towns and villages, and claiming lives in the process.  The main areas affected include the Valle d’Aosta and Piedmont regions in northern Italy and the Valais and Ticino regions of Switzerland. France has also seen some heavy rains and flooding.

The latest count showed that seven people had been killed due to the impact of these storms.

Late June and early July are prime time for getting out onto the Alpine trails in these regions. So, if you’re planning to hike in the areas affected this month, it is wise to check local weather and news to find out what the current situation. For example, the town of Cogne, near Gran Paradiso National Park in northern Italy, has been completely cut off due to landslides taking out the road leading to it, and hundreds of people had to be evacuated to safety by helicopter.

Hurricane Beryl

On June 28, a tropical storm in the Atlantic quickly developed into a Category 4 hurricane, as it hit the Caribbean islands of Grenada and St Vincent and the Grenadines. Hurricane Beryl, which has strengthened and weakened over the past week, has thus far caused severe damage to several Caribbean islands, Venezuela, and Mexico before heading to southern Texas, and has claimed 12 lives, at the latest count.

This hurricane is significant not only for the devastation it has caused, but it has become the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record, surpassing Hurricane Emily from July 2005. Many believe the warming ocean temperatures are to blame for the early nature of the hurricane as well as the strong wind speed.

While it is early in the season for hurricanes, Where to Hike When suggests avoiding the months of June to November for most of the Caribbean due to the risk of rainy weather and hurricanes in this period. Where to Hike When recommends traveling and hiking in the Caribbean islands typically in the winter/spring months (ie. December to April) when it is dry.

Reservations for Mount Rainier National Park

Washington state has some of the most beautiful mountain landscapes in the USA. From the majestic Cascade range to the serene Olympic Peninsula, there are snow-capped peaks, lush forests and crystal-clear lakes to behold as you hike through an extensive network of trails inside and outside of the state’s national parks.

One of the most well-known of Washington’s national parks is Mount Rainier National Park, home to the state’s highest peak, Mount Rainier. The park attracts thousands of hikers throughout the summer months to explore the more than 250 miles of trails in the park. It is so popular that, beginning summer 2024, a timed-entry reservation system has been implemented to ensure that the park (and its natural resources) are not overwhelmed by crowding.
