Best Hiking Trails in Ukraine


Ukraine is a large Eastern European country that has mountain landscapes in the far west of the country, as well as in the southern coast of the Crimean peninsula on the Black Sea.  The Carpathian Mountains in the western part of the country offer up plenty of hiking opportunities such as Mount Hoverla, Chornohora Ridge and Pip Ivan Mountain.  The best months to hike in Ukraine are April to October. 

*As of February 2022, both areas are off limits to travelers due to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

When To Hike in Ukraine?

April – October: For the Carpathians, the best months are May – September, with August and September being the least rainiest.  For Crimean peninsula, the best months are April – October
October: Carpathians could be ok in October
November – March: Cold; snow

Climate: Moderately continental – hot summers, cold winters

Medium: While hiking is a popular activity in Ukraine, good to have a guide as not all trails are well marked.  There a lot of places to hike outside of the national parks.

Most popular hikes in Ukraine

The majority of hiking is found in the far west of the country in the Carpathian mountains, amongst the national parks and also outside of them. There are many subranges of the Carpathians and mountain towns within them that are good bases for hiking. The mountains on the Crimean peninsula have excellent hiking but not open to most tourists. Highest Mountain: Mt Hoverla (2061 m), in the Carpathian Mountains.
