Best Hiking Trails in Timor-Leste

Overview

Formerly part of Indonesia as East Timor, Timor-Leste occupies the eastern half of the island of Timor.  Two distinct sections make up this country and it is pretty much all mountainous, but not very well-known as a tourist destination.  The main areas for hiking here include Mount Ramelau, Oecussi, the Matebean Mountains, and Atauro Island. May – November: Fairy dry and least hot.  Driest between July – September
April: Some rain
December – March: Rainy season
Climate: Tropical – wet and dry seasons.  Temps quite uniform throughout the year, slightly cooler during summer months.

Accessibility of Hiking

Medium: There are some well known hiking trails, but you should still hire a guide for any mountain hikes.

Most of this mountainous country is amenable to hiking. The main areas are the Matebean Mountains in the east, the area south of Dili; in Oecussi; and on Atauro Island. Highest Mountain: Tatamailau or Foho Tatmailau or Mt Ramelau ( 2986 m).
