New Caledonia is a small group of islands lying off the eastern coast of Australia, but are a department of France and are close to French Polynesia.  The main island, Grande Terre, is quite mountainous and has beautiful trails to hike.  Some of the main hiking areas include: Dumbea Mountains, Blue River Provincial Park, Mont Panie, Mont Dore, Dogny Plateau, and the long distance trail, GR NC 1, which is a 123 km trek, parts of which can be done as day hikes.  The best months to hike in New Caledonia are April – November.  Read on for more information on where and when to hike in New Caledonia.

When To Hike in New Caledonia?

April – November: Drier period; least rainiest from July – October, coolest between June – September
December – March: Hottest, rainiest and chance of cyclone
Climate: Tropical – which means a hot, rainy season and a cool, drier season.  Cyclones are most common from Dec – March.  Temps steady throughout the year.  South rainier than north and east coast rainier than west coast.  Trade winds blow here.
