Overview

Independent from Serbia since 2008, Kosovo is a small country that has a mountainous perimeter excellent for hiking.  Some of the main areas to hike in Kosovo include: the Kosovo Accursed Mountains, the Sharr Mountains and the Kopaonik Mountains.  Popular hikes include the well known long distance trails such as the Peaks of the Balkans, High Scardus Trail and Via Dinarica, as well as many great day hikes.   The best months to hike in Kosovo are May to October.  It is safe to travel to Kosovo. When To Hike in Kosovo?

Late May to early October: For higher altitudes, June – September will be the optimal months
November – early May: Cold and snow
Climate: Continental – hot summers, cold winters.  Depending on the year, can go later in May and first snows arrive in October

Accessibility of Hiking

Easy – Medium: Since it’s not a well-known hiking destination, much of the hiking infrastructure one would expect from a European country doesn’t exist, but it’s getting there.  The long-distance trails such as the Via Dinarca and Peaks of the Balkans are well known and well travelled.  Also trails are not well marked, and people may not speak English.

Top Places to Hike in Kosovo

The main areas to hike are along the northern and southern borders of the country, in the Sharr Mountains (south) and the Accursed Mountains (northwestern). There are two national parks in the country. There are a few well-known long distance trails that run through Kosovo. Highest Mountain: Gjeravica (2630 m), in the Accursed Mountains.
