Germany is a large European nation (straddling western and central Europe) that offers so much in terms of arts and culture, but also has excellent hiking in the very south of the country as well as in the Black Forest, and the hiking infrastructure to match. The main hiking regions in Germany are the Bavarian Alps in places such as Berchtesgaden National Park and near towns such as Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Mittenwald; Bavarian Forest National Park; Black Forest.  As well, there low altitude mountain areas such as the Harz Mountains and the Saxony region.  Hiking is a national pastime in Germany and there are no shortage of well established trails to embark on here.  The best months to hike in Germany are June to September for the Alps but a longer period for other regions.  Read on for more information on where and when to hike in Germany.

Most popular hikes in Germany

There are low mountain ranges in the central part of Germany (known as the Uplands), but the real mountainous areas are in the very south where edges of the Alps creep into Germany from Switzerland and Austria. The two main mountain hiking areas are in the Bavarian Alps (in the very south of the country bordering Austria) and the Black Forest. There’s a few other minor regions such as Harz Mountains (low altitude) and Saxony region (low altitude). Highest Mountain: Zugspitze (2962 m) in the Bavarian Alps.

  • To the east of the Alps, quite remote/wild, with bears, lynxes, but lots of well-marked hiking trails
