Best Hiking Trails in Federated States of Micronesia

Overview

The Federated States of Microniesia is made up of more than 600 islands, lying in the South Pacific near Solomon Islands, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands and Marshall Islands.  The four states capture all the islands; they are Pohnpei (where the capital is), Chuuk, Kosrae and Yap. There are low mountains to explore on some of these islands.  The main islands to hike on are Chuuk Lagoon, Kosrae and Pohnpei, where hikes such as Octopus Mountain, Mt. When To Hike in Federated States of Micronesia?

January – March: Least wet time period, but can be quite windy
April – August: Rainy but much less windy
September – December: Rainy; cyclone risk.  In Kosrae, April – December is very rainy

Climate: Equatorial – hot, humid, rainy all year round.  Windward slopes of larger islands are very wet.  A few sites have talked about how wet these islands are; “wettest places on Earth” (particularly Pohnpei).

Medium – Hard:  There aren’t many established trails and hiking is not a popular activity amongst locals.  It may be difficult to find guides who know routes.. Also trails are much more difficult than they may seem due to the humidity and the terrain.

Pohnpei is the largest island and most developed. The state of Chuuk is mainly centred around Chuuk Lagoon, a group of mountainous islands. Yap is hilly but not mountainous, so not included here. Highest Mountain: Mount Nanlaud (782 m) on Pohnpei island.
